Violet
Violet answers the phone at the tea shop. Itâs Queenie.
âTell Spud this isnât about him,â Queenie begins. âI just need some time away. Until I can get my head straight.â
âWhere are you?â Violet asks.
âIâm calling from a restaurant in Charleston.â
âCharleston? But why?â Ava looks over at Violet as though she can tell somethingâs up. Violetâs eyes widen to confirm her suspicions.
âI donât want to talk about it right now,â Queenie says. âI just need some time. Please tell Spud what I told you.â
Violet agrees that she will, and before she can say anything else, Queenie hangs up.
âEverything okay?â Ava asks.
âIâm not sure,â Violet says. âSomethingâs going on with Queenie.â
Avaâs eyes soften. âI like Queenie. I hope sheâs okay.â
Violet thanks her and asks Ava to cover the front while she goes back to call Rose. Rose picks up on the first ring.
âQueenie just called from Charleston. She says she needs some time away to think.â
âI was afraid something like that might happen.â
âWhat do you mean?â Violet asks.
âShe must have read the diary, Vi. She was waiting for me here at the cottage, and it was sitting on a table in my studio.â
Violet pauses. âEarlier today, she accused me of acting strange. She said both of us wereâyou and me. So, she must have known we were keeping something from her.â
âThis canât be good,â Rose says.
Violet agrees.
âDoes she know anyone in Charleston?â
âNot that I know of.â
They both are quiet, but Violetâs brain wonât shut up. She glances out into the tea shop, seeing that Ava could use some help.
âWhat should we do?â Rose says finally, sounding as clueless as Violet feels.
âI guess the first thing is to tell Spud,â Violet says. âHeâs probably worried. Iâll run home after the lunch crowd clears out.â She pauses. âI shouldnât have read her tea leaves,â Violet adds.
âWhat makes you say that?â
âThey predicted her world was about to turn upside down,â Violet says. âAnd there was something about her taking a long trip. Maybe that planted a seed.â
âMaybe the tea leaves were right,â Rose says. âBoth those things have happened.â
Violet hadnât thought of that possibility. Ava comes into the back to grab some fresh scones, and Violet apologizes for taking so long, but Ava tells her not to worry.
âHave you ever known her to do this before?â Rose asks.
âNever,â Violet says. âHave you?â
âNever.â
âWell, I guess we just need to let her do what she needs to do,â Violet says, noting a bit of worry in her voice. âI mean, sheâs in her sixties not a sixteen-year-old. Sheâll call us if she needs us, right?â
âShe will,â Rose says. âBut I imagine sheâs devastated.â
âThose Temples can create a ruckus even from beyond the grave,â Violet says, before remembering that Rose is a Temple, too. She apologizes.
âNo, youâre right,â Rose says.
âHow are you dealing with Spud being your dad?â Violet asks.
âI asked him about where he grew up and about his family this morning,â Rose says. âTalk about awkward.â
âBut Spudâs one of the most easygoing guys on the planet,â Violet says.
